Optative Sentences(Wishes, blessings, prayers)
ऐसे वाक्य जिनसे आशीर्वाद देने, प्रार्थना करने, अभिशाप देने तथा इच्छा/मनोकामना के भाव का बोध हो, उन्हें Optative Sentences कहते हैं। जैसे-
Such sentences which convey the feeling of blessing, praying, cursing and desire are called Optative Sentences. As-
1. May God help you!
(भगवान आपकी मदद करें!)
2. May you live long!
(भगवान करे आपकी लंबी उम्र हो!)
3. May he get success!
(ईश्वर करे वह सफल हो जाये!)
4. God bless you!
(ईश्वर आपको आशीर्वाद दें!)
Rules:
1. ‘Optative Sentence’ को ‘direct’ से ‘indirect’ बनाते समय ‘reporting verb’ में ‘said’ के स्थान पर ‘reported speech’ के अर्थ के अनुसार ‘blessed/cursed/wished’ इत्यादि का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
While making ‘Optative Sentence’ from ‘direct’ to ‘indirect’, in ‘reporting verb’, instead of ‘said’, ‘blessed/cursed/wished’ etc. is used according to the meaning of ‘reported speech’.
2. Inverted commas को हटा कर that लिखते हैं।
Remove inverted commas and write ‘that’.
3. Direct Speech में आए हुए Optative Sentence को Assertive Sentence में बदल कर लिखते हैं।
Optative Sentence in Direct Speech is changed into Assertive Sentence.
4. ‘Wish’ वाले sentences में ‘would that’ को हटा दिया जाता है।
Delete ‘would that’ from sentences of wish.
5. अन्य परिवर्तन साधारण वाक्य की तरह होते हैं।
Other changes are like simple sentences.
6. अंत में, Exclamation mark की जगह full stop लगा दिया जाता है।
Finally, replace exclamation mark with full stop.
Examples-
1. Direct: He said, “May you earn lots of recognition!”
Indirect: He prayed that I might earn lots of recognition.
2. Direct: My father said to me, “May you succeed in your life.”

Note- सामान्यतः Prayed के बाद object का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता क्योंकि प्रार्थना भगवान से की जाती है, किसी इंसान से नहीं। अगर ‘prayed’ के बाद object लगा दिया जाएगा तो इसका मतलब होगा कि उस object (me, him, her, etc.) से prayer की जा रही है। इसीलिए prayed के बाद object नहीं लिखा जाता।
परंतु यदि आप prayed के बाद object का प्रयोग करना चाहते हैं तो for+ object का प्रयोग करना पड़ेगा।
Note- अगर ‘Reported Speech’ में May के बाद ‘God’ word का use किया गया है तो हम said या said to को हमेशा prayed में convert करेंगे।
For example-

Indirect: My mother prayed that God might save me. OR

9. Direct: She said to him, “May God pardon your sin.”

Cursed या Blessed के बाद object का प्रयोग अवश्य किया जाता है।
An object must be used after cursed or blessed.
Examples-
10. Direct: Mother said to me, “May you live long!”
Indirect: Mother blessed me that I might live long.
11. Direct: They said to the children, “May you all go to hell!”
Indirect: They cursed the children that they all might go to hell.

Indirect: She cursed me that I might go to hell. OR
She cursed me to go to hell.
