Use of Need and Dare- ये दोनों ही verbs Semi-modal verbs कहलाती हैं क्योंकि इनका प्रयोग main verb के रूप में भी किया जा सकता है और modal verb के रूप में भी। As a main verb इनका प्रयोग Positive, Negative तथा Interrogative तीनों तरह के वाक्यों में किया जा सकता है परन्तु as a modal verb इनका प्रयोग केवल Negative तथा Interrogative Sentences में ही किया जा सकता है।
Need- जरूरत पड़ना, आवश्यकता पड़ना
Dare- Verb Dare के निम्नलिखित दो अर्थ होते है-
1. किसी को चुनौती देना अथवा ललकारना
2. कुछ करने का साहस दिखाना
Examples of need and dare
मैं उसका विरोध करने की हिम्मत रखता हूं।
I dare to oppose him.✓✓✓( as a main verb)
I dare oppose him. ××× ( as a modal verb)
मैं उसका विरोध करने की हिम्मत नहीं रखता हूं।
I don’t dare to oppose him.
I dare not oppose him.
क्या मैं उसका विरोध करने की हिम्मत रखता हूं?
Do I dare to oppose him?
Dare I oppose him?
Important Notes about Use of Need and Dare
1. जब Dare &Need का प्रयोग as a main verb किया जाता है तब इनके तुंरत बाद ‘to’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है तथा negative एवं Interrogative Sentences बनाने के लिए do,does ,did helping verbs का प्रयोग किया जाता हैं।
Examples-
घर देर से जाने की उसकी हिम्मत नहीं हुई।
She didn’t dare to go home late.
आपकी यहां आने की हिम्मत कैसे हुई?
How do you dare to come here?
मुझे आपसे कुछ बात करनी है।
I need to talk to you about something.
मैं यह कहने का साहस रखता हूं कि आप गलत है।
I dare to say that you’re wrong.
2. जब need and dare का प्रयोग as a modal verb किया जाता है तब इनके पश्चात ‘To’ का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता और ना ही negative तथा Interrogative Sentences बनाने के लिए do, does, did जैसी किसी helping verb का प्रयोग किया जाता है । इस दशा में ये खुद helping verb का कार्य करते हैं।
Examples-
आपको चिंता करने की जरूरत नहीं है।
You need not worry.
उसकी मेरे फ़ोन को छूने की हिम्मत कैसे हुई?
How dared he touch my phone?
आपकी यहां आने की हिम्मत कैसे हुई?
How dare you come here?
उसे सभी प्रश्नों का अभ्यास करने की आवश्यकता नहीं है।
She need not practise all the questions.
उन्हें प्रवेश से पहले अनुमति मांगने की आवश्यकता नहीं है।
They need not ask the permission before entering.
3. As a modal verb need and dare का प्रयोग केवल Negative एवं Interrogative Sentences में किया जाता है। Affirmative Sentences में इनका प्रयोग एक modal की तरह नहीं किया जा सकता।
उसे मुझसे बात करने की जरूरत नहीं है।
He need not talk to me.
उसे कपड़े खरीदने की जरूरत नहीं है।
He need not purchase clothes.
तुम्हें आने की जरूरत नहीं है।
You need not come.
उसमें मंच पर बोलने का साहस नहीं है।
He dare not speak on the stage.
बच्चे में अंधेरे कमरे में अकेले जाने की हिम्मत नहीं है।
The child dare not go into the dark room alone.
4. जब हम Dare & Need को main verb की तरह प्रयोग करते हैं तब इनका प्रयोग Present, Past या Future किसी भी Tense में किया जा सकता है परन्तु जब हम Dare & Need को modal verb की तरह प्रयोग करते हैं तब इनका प्रयोग केवल Present tense में किया जाता है।
Examples-
उसने मुझे गाली देने की हिम्मत की।
He dared to abuse me.
उसे वहां जाने की जरूरत पड़ी।
He needed to go there.
ऊंची बाड़ से कूदने की अविनाश की हिम्मत नहीं हुई।
Avinash didn’t dare to jump off the high fence.
उसने ऐसा करने की हिम्मत नहीं की।
He didn’t dare to do it.
उसे सच बताने की मेरी हिम्मत नहीं हुई।
I didn’t dare to tell him the truth.
यदि आप व्यस्त थे तो आपको आने की आवश्यकता नहीं थी।
You didn’t need to come if you were busy.
वो आपको call करने की हिम्मत करेगा।
He will dare to call you.
वह नौकरी छोड़ने की हिम्मत नहीं करेगा।
He will not dare to resign from the job.
Note- इन सभी sentences को need & dare को as a modal verb use करके translate नहीं किया जा सकता क्योंकि modal verb के sentences केवल Present में बनाये जा सकते हैं।
Perfect sentences में need & dare का प्रयोग-
( Use of need and dare in perfect sentences)
A. उसने ये फैसला लेने की हिम्मत की है।
He has dared to take this decision.
B. क्या उसने ये फैसला लेने की हिम्मत की है?
Has he dared to take this decision?
C. उसने उस दिन वहां जाने की हिम्मत की थी।
He had dared to go there that day.
Note-Modal verbs में perfect के sentences नहीं बनाते जा सकते।
5. Dare &Need का प्रयोग कभी भी continuous form में नहीं किया जाता है अर्थात इनका प्रयोग Present, Past या Future के continuous tense या Perfect Continuous Tense में नहीं किया जा सकता है।
Examples-
मुझे वहां जाने की जरूरत पड़ रही है।
I am needing to go there. ×××
मुझे वहां जाने की जरूरत पड़ रही है/ मुझे वहां जाने की जरूरत है।
I need to go there.✓✓✓
वह वहां जाने की हिम्मत कर रहा है।
He is daring to go there. ×××
He dares to go there. ✓✓✓
उसे सबूत की जरूरत पड़ रही है।
He is needing proof. ×××
He needs proof. ✓✓✓
आपको अधिक ध्यान से देखने की आवश्यकता है।
You are needing to look more carefully. ×××
You need to look more carefully. ✓✓✓
6. जब Dare का अर्थ किसी को चुनौती देना अथवा ललकारना होता है तो इस दशा में यह एक Transitive verb होती है जिसके कारण इसके साथ किसी object का आना अनिवार्य होता है।
Examples-
मैं तुम्हें मुझसे प्रतिस्पर्धा करने की चुनौती देता हूं।
I dare you to compete with me.
वह मुझे शिखर पर चढ़ने की चुनौती देता है।
He dares me to climb to the peak.
इसे लो! मैं तुम्हें चुनौती देता हूं।
Take it! I dare you.
मैं आपको वहां जाने की चुनौती देता हूं।
I dare you to go there.
मोहन ने मुझे उसके खिलाफ बोलने की चुनौती दी।
Mohan dared me to speak against him.
7. कभी-कभी जब need & dare का प्रयोग as a main verb किया जाता है तब उनके बाद infinitive ( to+V1) ना लगा हो कर कोई object लगा होता है। इस तरह के वाक्यों में need और dare कभी भी Semi-modal की तरह काम नहीं करते क्योंकि यहां main verb बनने के लिए कुछ नहीं होता है।
Examples-
मुझे किसी मदद की जरूरत नहीं है।
I don’t need any help.
उसे पैसों की जरूरत नहीं है।
He doesn’t need money.
क्या आपको कुछ भोजन चाहिए?
Do you need some food?
8. जब need & dare का प्रयोग Modal verbs की तरह किया जाता है तब ये अपने subject पर depend नहीं होती अर्थात इस दशा में इनके साथ कभी भी s या es का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता। तब इनके साथ हमेशा V1 का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
Examples-
उसे वहां जाने की जरूरत नहीं है।
He needs not go there. ×××
He need not go there. ✓✓✓
साहिल की मुझसे लड़ने की हिम्मत नहीं हुई।
Sahil dares not fight with me. ×××
Sahil dare not fight with me. ✓✓✓
Examples:
क्या तुम्हारी उसको पीटने की हिम्मत है?
Do you dare to beat him?
Dare you beat him?
तुम्हारी यह कदम उठाने की हिम्मत नहीं है।
You don’t dare to take such a step.
You dare not take such a step.
क्या मुझमें उसके सामने खड़े होने की हिम्मत है?
Dare I stand before him?
Do I dare to stand before him?
क्या उसने आपसे बहस करने की हिम्मत की?
Did he dare to argue with you?
क्या उसमें आपके सामने बोलने की हिम्मत है?
Dare he speak before you?
Does he dare to speak before you?
मैं तुम्हें हराने की चुनौती देता हूं।
I dare to beat you.
मुझमें उसे थप्पड़ मारने की हिम्मत है।
I dare to slap him.
मुझमें नदी पार करने की हिम्मत नहीं है।
I dare not cross the river.
I don’t dare to cross the river.
उसने पूछने की हिम्मत नहीं की।
He didn’t dare to ask.
क्या उसे वहां जाने की जरूरत नहीं पड़ी?
Did he not need to go there?
क्या वो आपको कॉल करने की हिम्मत करेगा?
Will he dare to call you?
उसने मुझे गाली देने की हिम्मत की।

उसे डॉक्टर की जरूरत नहीं है।
He does not need a doctor.
प्रवीण को अपनी कार साफ़ करने की आवश्यकता थी।
Praveen needed to wash his car.
मुझे और ज्यादा दवाई लेने की जरूरत नहीं थी।
I didn’t need to take more medicine.
बच्चों को खुशहाल घरेलू माहौल की जरूरत है।
Children need a happy home environment.
दिन भर में कितने पानी की जरूरत है?
How much water is needed throughout the day?
मस्तिष्क को रक्त की निरंतर आपूर्ति की आवश्यकता होती है।
The brain needs a continuous supply of blood.
हमें इन समस्याओं को हल करने के लिए किसी को ढूंढने की जरूरत है।
We need to find someone to solve these problems.
क्या उसने उस दिन वहां जाने की हिम्मत की थी?
Had he dared to go there that day?
उसे वहां जाने की जरूरत पड़ती है।
He needs to go there.
उसे आपको कॉल करने की जरूरत नहीं पड़ेगी।
He will not need to call you.
उसे आपको कॉल करने की जरूरत कब पड़ेगी?
When will he need to call you?
उसने किसी तरह अंदर जाने की हिम्मत की।
He somehow dared to go in.
यहां आने की आपकी हिम्मत कैसे हुई?
How dare you come here?

उसे ये बात मुझे बताने की जरूरत नहीं है।
He doesn’t need to tell me about it.
He need not tell me about it.
हर किसी को थोड़ा आराम करने की जरूरत है।

Note- Need and Dare को Semi-modal verbs के अलावा Marginal modal verbs भी कहा जाता है।
