Use of ‘Had better’

Although ‘had’ is the past form of ‘have’, we use “had better” to give advice about the present or future. We use “had better” to give advice about specific situations, not general ones. If you want to talk about general situations, you must use “should”. Let’s start learning about ‘Use of Had better’.

Had better–Meaning- अच्छा होगा, बेहतर होगा, तुम्हारी भलाई इसी में है

It is used in English grammar as a  modal auxiliary verb. We always use verb 1 after modal verb.

Had better का प्रयोग English grammar में दो तरह से किया जाता है-

1. To give advice and suggestions ( salah dene ke liye)
2. To threaten somebody ( Dhamki dene ke liye)

It is different from other advice verbs because it implies a threat or a danger if the advice is not followed.

(Had better often implies that something negative will happen if something is not done and it often sounds like a threat or a warning.)

Structure- Sub.+ had better + v1 + obj. (for positive sentences)

You had better buzz off from here.

( behtar hoga ki tum yaha se dafa ho jao)

You had better go by bus.

( behtar hoga ki tum bus se jao)

We had better leave her alone for a few minutes.

( hamare liye achha hoga ki hum use kuch minutes ke liye akela chhod de)

You had better shut your mouth and do work

(achha hoga ki tum apna muh band karo aur apna kaam karo)

You had better tell me everything.

(tumhare liye behtar hoga ki tum mujhe sab kuch bata do)

You had better take medicine on time.

( tumhe samay per dava lena achha rahega)

You had better mend your ways.

( tumhari bhalai isee me hai ki tum apni adat sudhar lo.)

You had better turn down his proposal.

( tumhare liye achha hoga ki tum uske prastav ko thukra do)

They had better settle their quarrel.

(Unke liye behtar hoga ki wo apna jhagda suljha le)

She had better complete her project in time to avoid fine.

( Uske liye bahtar hoga ki fine se bachane ke liye wo apna project samay per pura kar le)

He had better change his way of speaking.

( Uske liye bahtar hoga ki wo apna bolne ka tarika badle)

You had better keep your mouth shut.

( Tumhare liye achha hoga ki tum apna muh band rakho)

We had better reach the airport at 5:00 or else, we may miss the flight.

( Hamare liye behtar hoga ki hum 5 baje airport pahunch jaaye warna hamari flight miss ho sakti hai)

You can also use it to provide a sense of desperation.

The movie had better end soon.

Achha hoga agar yeh movie jaldi khatam ho jaaye)

They had better be here before we start dinner.

( Achha ho agar wo hamare dinner shuru karne se pahle yaha par ho)

Desperate hopes and warnings usually refer to the near future.

Note: 1. It is always used for giving present or future sense

2. It is used in particular situations, not in general situations.

NEGATIVE SENTENCES

Structure-Sub.+ had better + not + v1 + obj.

You had better not go there.

( behtar hoga ki tum waha mat jao)

You had better not tease her.

( tumhari bhalai isee me hai ki tum use tang na karo)

We had better not get into his trap.

( hamari bhalai isee me hain ki hum uske chakkar me na aaye)

You had better not argue with him.

( behtar hoga tum uske saath bahas mat karo)

You had better not play with him.

( tumhari  bhalai  isee me hai ki tum uske saath na khelo)

You had better not eat fast food.

( tumhare liye achha hoga ki tum fast food na khao)

You had better not say anything.

( Tumhare liye achha hoga ki tum kuch na kaho)

You had better not ignore it.

( Tumhare liye bahtar hoga ki ise andekha mat karo)

You had better not keep my purse there, someone might steal it.

( Achha hoga ki tum mera purse waha mat rakho, koi ise chura sakta hai)

You had better not disturb me.

( Tumhari bhalai isse me hai ki tum mujhe preshan mat karo)

You had better not smoke here because smoking is illegal in public places.

( Tumhare liye achha hoga ki tum yaha smoking mat karo kyun ki public places me smoking gairkanooni hai)

(If you smoke, the police will give you a ticket.)

You will not construct a sentence like this-

(had better not….)

We had better not miss the start of the movie.

( Behtar hoga ki hum shuru ki movie miss na kare)

Interrogative Sentences

Structure- (WH)+ had + sub. + better + v1 + obj?

Had I better speak English?

( kya mera English bolna behtar hoga?)

Had you better go there?

( kya tumhara waha jaana sahi hoga?)

Had I better learn English than any other language?

( kya mera kisi dusri bhasa ke bajay English sikhna sahi rahega?)

Had I better phone him?

( kya mera use phone karna thik rahega?)

Had I better speak to John before I send the parcel?

Kya mera parcel bhejne se pahle John ko batana thik rahega?)

Had we better leave a note for her on the table?

(Kya uske liye mej per ek note chhod dena hamare liye behtar rahega?)

An important note in the use of had better–You should never use ‘to’ after v1 that comes after had better in our sentences. In negative sentences ‘not’ is used after had better.

It is used for actions we think people should do or which are desirable in a specific moment.

We use ‘had better’ to give strong advice. ‘Had better’ is not used in polite request because it may suggest a threat.

(इसीलिए अपने seniors के साथ had better का प्रयोग करना ग़लत होगा।)

You had better go now.

( Tumhari bhalai isse me hai ki tum ab jao)

In spoken English, we normally use the short form ‘d better. And in informal speech, people sometimes say just ‘better’ (without had).

You better go home.

I better get it right this time.

Had better not ( ‘d better not) is the negative form of had better.

You’d better not say a word about this.

I’d better not forget.

You’d better leave now or you will miss your bus.

You’d better behave yourself.

In informal English ,we sometimes say I had best, used with the same meaning.

I’d best go home.
