Use of Let in English Grammar

To learn ‘Use of Let in English Grammar’ is very important. It helps us to speak fluently. 

Let – करने देना (karne dena)

Let(transitive verb)-to permit/allow someone to do something

[Allow is more formal than let but less formal than permit]

( इन वाक्यों में sub. खुद किसी काम को नहीं करता; बल्कि दूसरों को करने देता है।)

Basic Structure- Let+object (living beings)+bare infinitive(verb1)

or

Let+him/her/me/them+v1+other words

Three forms of let- let  let  let

Let is used in many ways in English grammar. Let’s see the use of Let one by one.

Note-(It is not used in passive sentences)

Use of Let in imperative sentences (for suggestion ,order and request)

Let me study.

Let me teach the children.

Let me find out who they are.

Let them think whatever they want to think.

Let him be happy in his own world.

Let the water boil.

Let her live her life.

Let him understand the situation first.

Negative Sentences-Negative sentences can be formed in two ways.

  1. Don’t- at the beginning
  2. Not- after let+object

Don’t let him study./ Let him not study.

Don’t let him come inside./ Let him not come inside.

Don’t let her teach the children./ Let her not teach the children.

Don’t let me find out the answers./ Let me not find out the answers.

Don’t let him pluck the twig.

Don’t let me down.

Let’s- It is a contraction of ‘Let us’.

It is to make suggestions about doing something. When we work together or do something with someone, we use let’s instead of let.

Structure-Let’s +v1+other words

Examples: Let’s help them.

Let’s see, what happens tomorrow.

Let’s split the bill.

Let’s call it a day.

Let’s hope for the best.

Let’s give him an+other chance.

Let’s have some fun.

Let’s go to the restaurant.

Let’s not talk about it.

Let’s not go to him.

Let’s not go on a picnic.

Let’s not go on holiday in July, it will be too hot.

LEMME

‘Lemme’ is a contraction for ‘let me’. It is used in informal conversations.

Structure-Lemme+v1+ other words

Lemme do it.

Lemme think over it.

Lemme see if I can do anything in this matter.

Lemme know whether you are going or not.

Lemme sleep for a while.

Lemme charge my phone first.

He didn’t lemme see it.

She lemme use her laptop.(She lets me use her laptop)

(We don’t use ‘s’ in contraction)

Don’t lemme down.

Use of Let in tenses in English Grammar

Present Indefinite Tense

Sub.+let/lets+ obj.+v1+other words

I/we/you/They/These/Those-Let

He/She/It/This/That/Any name-Lets

पहचान-(कोई काम) करने देता है/ करने देती है/ करने देते हैं

E.g.-My father lets you come here.

You don’t let me do what I want.

I let him use my laptop.

Do I let him touch my mobile?

She lets her dog wander in the garden.

She does not let anyone come close to her.

Sometimes, my brother lets me win.

Why does she not let you attend the party?

You don’t even let me think.

He does not let me play.

Past Indefinite Tense

Sub.+let(v2)+obj.+v1+ other words

पहचान-(कोई काम) करने दिया था/ करने देते थे

He let me come.

He didn’t let me come.

I didn’t let him speak.

Did you let him speak?

He let me play football.

He didn’t let me play football.

Did he let me play football?

Why didn’t he let me play football?

Who let you play cricket?

Who let you go?

He didn’t let me go on tour.

I didn’t let him go to Mumbai.

Sometimes, object is not mentioned. In that case, we use v1 after let.

e.g. I let study. I let write. I let go.

The guard lets go in.

The guard does not let go in.

FUTURE INDEFINITE TENSE

Sub.+will+let+obj.+v1+other words पहचान-(कोई काम) करने देगा/ करने देंगे

Papa will not let you go.

I will never let you go away from me.

I won’t let anyone hurt my friend.

I know he will not let me live.

Will he let me live?

Who will let me live?

I will not let him speak before him.

I will let you learn English.

He will not let me go there.

Will you not let me study?

How will Rohan let me study?

Who will let me study?

Won’t you let him use your laptop?

Will you let me dance with you?

I won’t let him get misguided.

Would you please let me take a sigh of relief for 2 minutes?

You are extremely tired, so I’ll let you take rest for today.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE

Sub.+is/am/are+letting+obj.+v1

पहचान-(कोई काम) करने दे रहा है/ करने दे रहे हैं

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

Sub.+was/were+letting+obj.+v1 पहचान-(को ई काम) करने दे रहा था/ करने दे रहे थे

FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE

Sub.+will be+letting+obj.+v1 पहचान-(कोई काम) करने दे रहा होगा/ करने दे रहे होंगे

e.g. He is letting me go.

He was letting me go.

He will be letting me go.

You are not letting me study.

You were not letting me study.

You will be letting me study.

He is not letting me work with anyone.

Who is letting you use my mobile?

They will not be letting her go home.

PRESENT PERFECT TENSE

Sub.+has/have+let+obj.+v1 पहचान-(कोई काम) करने दिया है

PAST PERFECT TENSE

Sub.+had+let+obj.+v1 पहचान- (कोई काम) करने दिया था

FUTURE PERFECT TENSE

Sub.+will have+let+obj.+v1+other words

पहचान- ( कोई काम) करने दिया होगा

e.g. He has let me come here.

I have not let him write.

Have you let him go?

Have you let him study?

I had let him go to Delhi.

He had let me use his phone before his father came.

My mom had let me play before I went to sleep.

I will have let him go.

He will have let him study.

PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

Sub.+ has/have been +letting+obj.+v1+other words

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

Sub.+ had been+letting+obj.+v1+other words

FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

Sub.+ will have been + letting+obj.+v1+ other words

e.g. I have been letting him go there for two years.

I had been letting him go there for two years.

I will have been letting him go there for two years.

My father has been letting me study in that college for three years.

My father had been letting me study in that college for three years.

My father will have been letting me study in that college for three years.

You have been letting me come here for 10 days.

I have been letting you speak for two days.

He has not been letting me study for the last two days.

Use of Let in  Modals

Sub.+ can/could/may/might/should etc.+let+obj.+v1+other words

I can let you speak.( main aap ko bolne de sakta hu)

I may let you speak.( main shyad aap ko bolne de sakta hu)

I might let you speak. (main shyad hi aap ko bolne de sakta hu)

He could let me speak.( wah mujhe bolne de sakta tha)

They will be able to let me speak.( wo mujhe bolne de sakenge)

They should let me speak. (unhe mujhe bolne dena chahiye)

You must let him study.(tumhe use jarur padne dena chahiye)

You ought to let him study.( aap ko use padne dena chahiye-moral)

You have to let him speak. ( aap ko use bolne dena hai)

You had to let him speak.(aap ko use bolne dena tha)

You will have to let him speak.( aap ko use bolne dena hoga)

You used to let him speak. ( aap use bolne diya karte the)

You need to let him speak. ( aap ko use bolne dene ki jarurat hai)

You dare to let him speak. ( aap me use bolne dene ki himmat hai)

You must let her make her own career.

My father can’t let me talk to her.

You should let her learn speaking English.

You should let these children play here.

I had to let my child go to park yesterday.

I used to let him play with me.

Would you please let me come in?

Would you please give me a glass of water?

You should let him use your mobile; he is no longer a kid.

I have to let him take rest now.

I had to let her do this work.

You will have to let her choose her own career.

Use of Let as an infinitive in English Grammar

To let her go there is a bad decision.

(use waha jaane dena ek bura nirnaya hai)

To let him die is inhumanity.

(use marne dena amanviyata hai)

To let those children play here is not appropriate.

(un bacho ko yaha khelne dena sahi nahi  hai)

To let that girl talk to that boy is not good for us.

(us ladki ko us ladke se baat karne dena hamare liye thik nahi hain)

Use of Let as a gerund in English Grammar

Letting that child play here is not good.

(us bache ko yaha khelne dena thik nahi hai)

Letting that girl shoot a video over there is not good.

(us ladki ko waha per video shoot karne dena thik nahi hai)

Letting him get beaten is timidness for you.

(use pitaai khane dena tumhare liye  kayarta hai)

Letting him starve is very bad.

( use bhukho marne dena bahut bura hai)

TO LET-to let someone take on rent (kiraye ke liye khali hai)
