Introduction

Swami Vivekananda was a spiritual leader, reformer and a compassionate human being. His childhood name was Narendra Nath Datta, later he became famous as Swami Vivekananda. The birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda in India is celebrated as National Youth Day. Every person in India remembers him as an extraordinary person with spiritual thoughts. He was a symbol of high thinking and simple living.

Family Background

Swami Vivekananda belongs to a kayasthas  family that was very spiritual. He was born in Kolkata on 12 January 1863. He was one of the eight siblings of his parents. His father’s name was Vishwanath Datta and mother’s name was Bhuvaneswari Devi. His father was an educated man who knew English and Persian well. By profession, he was a successful lawyer at the Calcutta high court. His mother was a housewife in a religious family. She was a pious lady.

Early Life and Education of Swami Vivekananda

Narendranath was a brilliant boy. He was active in music, gymnastics and studies. He graduated from the university of Calcutta and acquired knowledge on various subjects. He was famous for his Sanskrit knowledge. He was born with a yogic nature. He practised meditation.

Swami Vivekananda met Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

Swami Vivekananda had  a religious mind. He had been  very keen to learn about God since his childhood. He always wanted to face the God. Once, when he was going through spiritual crisis, he met Sri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa  who was a priest at Dakshineswar Kali Temple and asked him a question whether he had seen God . Sri Ramakrishna answered him, “Yes, I have. I See him as clearly as you, only in a more profound sense”. Having been impressed by his spiritual personality , Vivekananda changed completely and accepted Ramakrishna as his spiritual master. He became one of the great followers of Sri Ramakrishna and started following his teachings. After the sad demise of Sri Ramakrishna, he became the monk and known as Swami Vivekananda.

Vivekananda and Hinduism

Swamiji  learned vast western philosophy and history. His Guru  taught him new lessons of Hinduism religion. Ramakrishna Deva explained to Swamiji that God builds living beings on earth. Thus, you must serve humankind for serving God. Having been inspired, Swamiji decided to serve humanity. Swamiji believed that Hinduism is a great religion. Hindu religion can accommodate other religion of India. He felt that the Hindu Samaj has the potential to become the spiritual teacher to the world. He believed, “Take up one idea in your life. Think of it, Live on that idea, Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.”

Swami Vivekananda at the Chicago session

After the death of his master, Vivekananda went to America to attend the world religions parliament in Chicago in 1893. When he started his speech addressing the people as brothers and sisters, all were startled aback who were present there. He touched everyone’s heart. In his lecture Swami Vivekananda explained to the world that God is one and different religions are like different rivers that end in the sea. He became popular all over the world after delivering his effective speeches and lectures in many places.

His contribution to Indian society

He asked young men and women to come forward and help the society. He asked them to selflessly discharge their duties. He spent his entire life in the development and growth of humanity for serving God. He used to live a healthy and sober living for controlling extra stress and anxieties.

Death of Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda, a spiritual leader, died on July 4, 1902 when he was just 39 at Belur Math in West Bengal. He did not predict any time or date of his death. However, he did predict of his death saying that he would not cross 40. His thoughts have always inspired people and will always be a source of energy for future generations.
