Removal of ‘too’

Toomeaningmore than required / more than enough/more than necessary/ more than needed

(It is an adverb.)

It always gives negative sense. It can’t be used with positive word.

(We use ‘too’ immediately before adjective or adverb. It is used to express more than what is needed)

For example, if we say

You are too beautiful. ××× ( It would be wrong)

you are very beautiful. √√√

This dress is long.

( I am ok with it or I am quite comfortable.)

This dress is too long.

(It is more than what is needed.)

We use ‘too’ meaning ‘more than enough’ in different positions.

Type 1-Removal of ‘Too’

Sub. +is/am/are/was/were+too+(-ve)adj.+to + v1 + other words

Examples-

मैं इतना थका हुआ हूं कि तुम्हारे घर नहीं आ सकता हूं।

( mai itna thaka hua hu ki tumhare ghar nahi aa sakta hoon.)

I am too tired to come to your home.

(This sentence can be written without using ‘too’ as well.)

I am so tired that I can’t come to your home.

उस जगह इतना शोर था कि मैं कुछ भी सही से नहीं सुन सकता था।

( us jagah itna shor tha ki main kuch bhi sahi se nahi sun sakta tha)

The place was too noisy to hear anything properly.

The place was so noisy that I couldn’t hear anything properly.

The place was so noisy that nothing can be heard properly.

वह इतना नर्वस था कि स्टेज पर अच्छे से परफॉर्म नहीं कर पाया।

(Wah itna nervous tha ki stage per achhe se perform nahi kar paaya)

He was too nervous to perform well on the stage.

He was so nervous that he could not perform well on the stage.

यह घर हमारे ठहरने के हिसाब से बहुत छोटा है।

( Yeh ghar hamare thaharane ke hisab se bahut chhota hai.)

The house is too small to accommodate us.

This house is so small that it cannot accommodate us.

वह इतना गरीब है कि अपने बच्चों को स्कूल नहीं भेज सकता।

(Wah itna garib hai ki apne bacho ko school nahi bhej sakta)

He is too poor to send his kids to school.

He is so poor that he cannot send his kids to school.

Type 2-Removal of ‘Too’

Sub.+ is /am/are /was/ were+ too + (-ve) adj. + for + a/an + noun

(Same subject in two clauses)

वह इतना धीमा है कि वह एक धावक नहीं बन सकता है।

(wah itna dheema hai ki wah ek dhaawak nahi ban sakta hai)

He is too slow for a runner.

He is so slow that he cannot be /become a runner.

(Note- He aur Runner ek hi person hain.)

वह इतना सुस्त था कि वह एक डॉक्टर नहीं बन सकता था।

(Wah itna sust tha ki wah ek doctor nahi ban sakta tha.

He was too dull for a doctor.

 He was so dull that he could not be /become a doctor.

मैं इतना कमजोर हूं कि पहलवान नहीं बन सकता।

(Main itna kamjor hoon ki pahalwaan nahi ban sakta.)

I am too weak for a wrestler.

I am so weak that I cannot be a wrestler.

सेब इतना खट्टा था कि इसे नहीं खाया जा सकता था।

(Apple itna khatta tha ki ise nahi khaya jaa sakta tha.)

Apple was too sour to eat.

Apple was so sour that it could not be eaten.

Type 3-Removal of ‘Too’

Sub.+is/am/are/was/were+too+(-ve)adj.+for + obj.

( Different subjects in two clauses)

पानी इतना ठंडा है कि हम इसे सहन नहीं कर सकते।

(Paani itna Thanda hai ki hum ise sahan nahi kar sakte.)

The water is too cold for us.

The water is so cold that we can’t bear it.

कॉफी इतनी गरम है कि मैं इसे पी नहीं सकता।

(Coffee itni garam hai ki main ise pee nahi sakta.)

The coffee is too hot for me.

The coffee is so hot that I cannot take it.

यह इतना भारी है कि तुम इसे उठा नहीं सकते।

(Yeh itna bhari hai ki tum ise utha nahi sakte.)

It is too heavy for you.

It is so heavy that you cannot lift it.

उसका दुख इतना गहरा है कि इसे आंसुओं में व्यक्त नहीं किया जा सकता।

(Uska dukh itna gahara hai ki ise aansuoo mein vyakt nahi kiya jaa sakta.)

Her sorrow is too deep for tears.

Her sorrow is so deep that it can’t be expressed in tears.

Her sorrow is so deep that she can’t express it in tears.

प्रश्न इतना मुश्किल है कि हम इसे सॉल्व नहीं कर सकते।

( Prasan itna muskil hai ki hum ise solve nahi kar sakte.)

The question was too difficult for me to solve.

The question was so difficult that I could not solve it.

The question was too difficult to be solved by me.

कार इतनी भारी थी कि वे इसे नहीं उठा सके।

Car itni bhari thi ki wo ise nahi utha sake.

The car was too heavy for them to lift it.

The car was so heavy that they couldn’t lift it.

काम इतना बड़ा है कि मैं इसे सम्भाल नहीं सकता।

(Kaam itna bada hai ki main ise sambhal nahi sakta.)

The work is too large for me.

The work is so large that I cannot handle it.

दीवार इतनी ऊंची है कि कोई भी ऊपर नहीं चढ़ सकता है।

(Diwar itni unchi hai ki koi bhi upar nahi chad sakta hai.)

The wall is too high to climb it up.

The wall is so high that one cannot climb it up.

Type 4-Removal of ‘Too’

यदि सिर्फ single Too दिया हो तो…

( यदि too..to का combination नहीं दिया है तो too ka removal नीचे दिए गए तरीके से किया जाएगा।  )

For example-

चाय बहुत ज्यादा गरम है।

(Chai bahut jyada garam hai.)

The tea is too hot.

The tea is hotter that it should be / It is proper.

तुम बहुत ज्यादा बातें करते हो।

(Tum bahut jyada baate karte ho.)

You talk too much.

You talk more than it is proper.

वह बहुत ज्यादा धीरे भागता है।

(Wah bahut jyada dheere bhagta hai.)

He runs too slowly. (adverb)

He runs more slowly than he should./He runs more slowly than it is proper.

रमेश जरुरत से ज्यादा धीरे चलता है।

(Ramesh jarurat se jyada dheere chalta hai.)

Ramesh goes too slowly.

Ramesh goes more slowly than it is proper.

मौसम बहुत गर्म है।

(Mausam bahut garm hai.)

The weather is too hot.

The weather is hotter that it is proper.

वह बहुत चालाक है।

(Wah bahut chalak hai)

He is too clever.

He is clever beyond the proper limit.

He is cleverer than he should be.

He is very/ excessively/extremely clever.

Type 5-Removal of ‘Too’

Too can be used with noun as well  besides adjective and adverb.

Too + Countable noun

I have bought too many dresses in the sale.

I have bought more dresses than I was actually needed.

He has bought too many chocolates.

He has bought more chocolates than he was needed.

Too + Uncountable noun

He added too much sugar in the coffee.

There is too much noise in the class.

Type 6

There is another use of ‘Too’ that is ‘bhi ( भी)

(Too का एक अन्य अर्थ भी है ,वह है_’भी’)

Too (adv.) अपने से पहले आई हुई चीज को qualify करता है।

I teach English too.( मैं इंग्लिश भी पढ़ाता हूं।

I too teach English. ( मैं भी इंग्लिश पढ़ाता हूं।

I love you too.( मैं तुमसे भी प्यार करता हूं।)

I too love you.( मैं भी तुमसे प्यार करता हूं।)

You too are a part of this.( तुम भी इसके हिस्से हो।)

You are a part of this too.( तुम इसके भी हिस्से हो यानि किसी और चीज के भी हिस्से हो।)

Cotton is grown in India too.(कपास भारत में भी उगाया जाता है।)

Type 7

Too is used for negative connotation.

( Too एक negative tone को ही modify करता है।)

He is too intelligent.×××

He is very intelligent.√√√√

He is too smart.√√√

He is too intelligent to pass.××

He is too intelligent to fail.√√√

He is too stupid to pass.√√√

                (-ve)         (+ve)

Too cannot be used before an adjective +noun like this-

He is a too fat man.×××

He is too a fat man.×××

He is too fat a man. √√√ (Right usage)

It is clear from the above explanation that the form of a sentence can be changed without changing its meaning. The transformation can be done using different methods.
